http://www.gutenberg.org/files/29090/29090-8.txt In an effort to become familiar with the material and STC's _style_, I've begun pre-writing: below I tried to put lines 1-162 in modern English (mostly), and deal with the exposition and Christabel=3D92s dialogue. Fun, consuming, and a big help for me. If you and Dale et al want to add and / or change anything, please do. Sometime between 1095 and 1291 PART I It's one a.m. by the castle clock and the owls have awakened the rooster: Tu

well. And there's the matter of STC's Lewti, a published re-write of WW's unpublished Beauty & Moonlight composed long before they met. (Dorothy contributed some things to Christabel - e.g., The one red leaf .) Oh! Do you have some _link_s, etc. re Dorothy’s and William’s influence on the poem? Also, have you read this, and if you have, what did you think? Alas, no dreams about the poem, no revelations as to why Christabel is wandering unattended in the middle of the night in the deep dark forest, a furlong (1/8 mile) from the castle. So much has gone on even before the curtain rises. Perhaps it is the dreams of her knight. Perhaps she's part Christian part pagan (oak tree, mistletoe, personification of oak tree). Where is this all taking place? And the Spring comes slowly up this way. Karla There's a Great Langdale southeast of the Lake District in Cumbria; southeast of that is Windemere. I don't see anything like Bratha Head or Witch's Lair. Bratha is the River Brathay. Dungeon-Ghyll is Dungeon Ghyll. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_Ghyll I love that we get to see the old spellings.

I fell asleep reading Christabel last night. I hope I don't fall too behind while I'm back east. Alas, no dreams about the poem, no revelations as to why Christabel is wandering unattended in the middle of the night in the deep dark forest, a furlong (1/8 mile) from the castle. Perhaps she's part Christian part pagan (oak tree, mistletoe, personification of oak tree). Karla They had to simmer a bit but your questions put me in mind of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
