In the era of rampant grade inflation, she needs to realize that her 2.7 GPA really isn't going to have potential employers jumping up and down, nor is career placement going to go out on a limb to place her ahead of much better students. T Dood! I've been teaching cowlidge kids for about 25 years.  I can't say I'm all THAT surprised...

In the era of rampant grade inflation, she needs to realize that her 2.7 GPA really isn't going to have potential employers jumping up and down unless you're applying to medical, pharmacy, law, or graduate school.....nobody really cares what her gpa is.   She's not getting a job because she's a tool....and that would be the case whether she had a 4.0 or a 2.7. You couldn't be more wrong if'n you were more wrong. 3.0, 3.5, etc. cutoffs for employers are very common.  A 2.7 will, at best, get her a temp job with a beltway defense contractor, or as a patent examiner.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/08/03/new.york.jobless.graduate/index.html? iref=mpstoryview IWFTF. In the era of rampant grade inflation, she needs to realize that her 2.7 GPA really isn't going to have potential employers jumping up and down, Maybe this is really the problem?  Colleges should do a better job of weeding people out and not inflating their grades.  Not everybody is made to be a college graduate, and the sooner they find out, the better.  Then, they can get on with their working life and not waste $18,000/year.  So perhaps the college should be sued. So tell me...if a student is by and large eligible, what criteria should they use for denying them admission? just raise their admissions standards.....there are no reasons why colleges like the college I graduated from or the college you work at needs to have so many students seeking college degrees........ So what you are saying is that we should divert a bunch of $$$ from four year schools to tech schools. nah....tech schools already have enough money.....(hell it's free for anyone in many states who hasnt been to a tech school to go)...... do something else with the money.  Maybe more grants for the actually decent students.  Or just save it.  I dunno...... So what you propose doing is telling a bunch of kids that they will not have access to an education beyond high school.  Even though that there aren't that many successful career paths out there for students with only HS diplomas. Not very cool. Jon

So tell me...if a student is by and large eligible, what criteria should they use for denying them admission?  I mean, there are kids that are booksmart enough to get by in college...even with a 2.7...but you just know are going to stuggle after they leave.  But that's not the college's fault. Jon That decision should be made by the student BEFORE college; that's when you need a good-to-great guidance counselor in high/prep school. Hell, TFGC and I have already decided that he's not cut out for college.  Conversely, like I mentioned before, there's no way I'd spend 4 yrs and $70k for a BA in IT...that's a 2 yrs program at best and spend the rest of the money on certs... the problem is that there are still a lot of decent entry level jobs (moreso in govt sector) that still require or give strong preference to those with a bs/ba.....even in IT fields. Im not saying it makes sense, but it still is sometimes the case. ...why am I going here... Anywhoo, from being in the IT field (corporate and education) for the past 17 yrs, the answer is no.  If there's anything that's going to set you ahead in this field its' gonna be certifications.  9 out of 10 employers will take a certification over a BA any day of the week. Mookie

Actually, I don't know about divert - but we should massively increase funding for vocational/technical programs.

I know someone who had a job offer rescinded _base_d on their last semesters grades pushing their GPA barely below 3.0.
