A few months back, I posted about a biology lab tech trainee position that I only had for two weeks. I was let go allegedly because my employer couldn't continue his research, but the real reason probably had to do with the technican who was supposed to be training me. Before I left, my employer advised me not to be so shy the next time I had a job, that is to not be so hesitant to ask questions to anyone in the lab, and he suggested that I use him as a reference and put the little experience I got in his lab on my resume. It's been awhile since I posted about this job. So, if any of you want to know more, you can search the Google archives. Loosing that job was a huge disappointment and a reminder that my Asperger's might interfere with my having a job after all. Although I felt like my hand/eye coordination has improved greatly since I was a child, I attributed poor coordination to the trouble I had using a pipette. I worried that my introverted nature might have contributed to the loss of my job. After I left that job, I resubmitted my resume, and I had an interview scheduled on the same day I had an appointment with a vocational rehabilitation counselor. The appointments were too close together in time and too far apart. So, I cancelled the interview, and heeding the advice of my mother and aunt, decided it would be better to get help through the Texas Rehabilitation Commission instead of trying to get another job. The counselor and his supervisor suggested that I attend a vocational rehabilitation facility for disabled people in order to learn job search and interview skills, and they told me that it would be best for me to initially work in a low stress part-time clerical position. They said that I should utimately focus on lab work since I already have a Biology degree and could work by myself in a lab. I had earlier asked about computer programming, but they obviously don't want to pay for any computer courses. The counselor told me that the report they received about my Asperger's said that I needed very limited contact with other people at a job. I'm not sure if that is entirely true. This week, I was supposed to attend some workshops on resume writing, job search skills, and interview skills at that rehabilitation facility. Due to a lack of transportation, I was unable to attend. This place is far from where I live. Now, I wonder if I should go there at all. I would love to have a job, even a job that doesn't require a degree, but I worry that I'll never be able to find another job without getting vocational rehabilitation help. At the same time, I think that I could probably get a job on my own if I tried. I'm afraid that I might be encouraged to mention my disability to employers at this rehabilitation place. Since many people know little or nothing about Asperger's, I refuse to. I certainly don't know what kind of accommodations I need because of my Asperger's.
