What makes something beautiful? We say a woman's face is beautiful, or a landscape is beautiful, yet we also say that of a scientific theory or of a novelist's _style_ of writing.  What quality do we see in these examples which we can point to as beauty? Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/

It's the most corny and cliched response you'll ever get, but really, 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder . DG

And why are standards of beauty relatively consistent (at the least among members of the same culture). Is a predisposition to see something as beautiful a biological trait, a cultural phenomena, what exactly? Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/

Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ I think that regardless of cultures, all people find some thing beautiful.  I know that in the case of a beautiful face, proportions have been studied almost mathematically - and it is symmetry that is appealing.  Visually, that seems to be very important and everyone has some inner aesthetic sense of it.   In many other things, I believe that affective associations must play a big role - and that is more an individual matter, lending credence to the saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder . The interesting question is 'why are so many beholders similar . Squiggles

Do you really think symmetry is enough to _base_ beauty on?

Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ The question may be similar to What makes you feel good? and, of course, this differs amongst individuals.  Culture sets out standards and of course, if an individual partakes of a culture, those standards are sought out in an _object_ of admiration. Since humans have similar genetic roots, and since societies must conform to some uniform standards to survive, some of this comes through in judging beauty. Nevertheless, standards evolve.  In judging sexual beauty, cultures not only differ between each other, but also change in time.  A woman considered beautiful in one decade may not be much appreciated in the next. Jean Harlow is not as much appreciated today as she was in her era.  Marylin  Monroe seems to have rather remarkable holding power, but perhaps that is just with me as she was a contemporary. Nephertete(spelling?)  still looks beautiful to me. Mathematical elegance is a form of beauty which encompasses economy of logic and much of good architecture has an economical beauty but again, that may be because I have a taste for Bauhous stuff and agree with Mies Van der Rohe..  Initial showings of great music and graphic art were frequently violently rejected and music from different cultures are only now being accepted universally as our society becomes global. I doubt a simple answer. Jan Sand
