Newsflash

When Oprah Winfrey discovered her passion was only 6 years old. Singing in church at the side of her grandmother's understandable that the life stories of ordinary people are interested in it more than anything. Then it decided that it will do all that passion in her life played a key role.

I just came across this article http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/19/magazine/19healthcare-t.html?hpw Its by Peter Singer. I often disagree with his philosophy but the article is about economics and makes sense.

Again I get back to basics - no system is perfect.  Churchill was right.  Public medicare is horrible unless you compare it to everything else. Tsk, tsk!  I think that what Churchill actually said was “It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.”   But I agree with everything else you said. Mique If you see Willow's original post with this, she clearly notes that she is paraphrasing Churchill. I was just jerking her chain, Joanne, as she does mine.   Mique Oh, well, then.  Never mind.

As to health insurance for the poor, I know a number of people in Connecticut who have the state Medicaid program for unemployed and underemployed people. ?Most doctors will not take it, so the protection is illusory. ?I know someone who can only see a specialist at a state run hospital (UConn Health Center) and the waiting list is so long that the appointment made several weeks ago is for October. ?(Note, people with Medicare get much better service.)         And you think this is an argument for more government health care programs? I have no love for the SAGA program as it is called in Connecticut.  It is more illusory than protective.  But my comment about Medicare was there because under that program people do get real health care - and doctors do not refuse to take Medicare patients, as they do refuse to take Medicaid patients. <snip Actually, Francis, they can and do reject Medicare patients.  My mom's doctor (who actually was a very good MD otherwise) told her that if it weren't for the fact that she had supplemental insurance (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) he'd have to turn her away because all she had was Medicare. And, from what I read, he is, by far, not alone in that rejection.

Waiters left out of latest minimum wage rise Fri Jul 24, 2009 12:13pm EDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. service sector employees who receive tips have been excluded from the latest hike in the federal minimum wage that kicked in on Friday, leaving the public to cover the cost of their healthcare, according to economists and advocates. The federal minimum wage on Friday rose to $7.25 from $6.55. But only seven states guarantee tipped workers the minimum wage, according to a report by the National Employment Law Project, a New York-_base_d advocacy group for low-income workers. The minimum wage for so-called tipped workers has been frozen at $2.13 an hour since 1991, the report found. Waitresses and waiters, who comprise the majority of tip-receiving workers, have nearly three times the poverty rate of the nation's workforce, it said. Wait staff are twice as likely to go without health insurance, partly because few employers help them pay for a health plan. James Parrott, the chief economist of the New York-_base_d Fiscal Policy Institute, said the public often pays for some of these low-income employees' healthcare. Low-wage workers without health insurance can cost taxpayers $3,000-$6,000 a year if covered by Medicaid, or, if they receive uncompensated care, they cost employers or individuals who have private health insurance an average of $2,500 per uninsured person receiving compensated care, he said by e-mail. The Fiscal Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank, in a report estimated that at the new federal rate, a full-time worker would earn $15,080 a year. Research has shown that workers benefiting from minimum wage increases in New York are disproportionately women, and minimum wage earners on average contribute most of their family's earnings, the institute's Michele Mattingly said in the report. Contrary to stereotype, large numbers of affected workers

Just watched a commercial from the anti-medicaid group in the US with a Canadian (supposedly) saying she had to go to the US for world class service . Here's some comments from a realtor in Montana.  Not exactly a hotbed of liberal thought. http://blog.buzzflash.com/contributors/2026
