Our client is one of Bermuda's premiere insurance providers.  They currently require a Senior Group Underwriter to lead a dependable, knowledgeable and competent Group Underwriting team that will deal with group policy eligibility and client queries, concerns and issues in an efficient, professional and prompt fashion and evaluate all risks in an _object_ive manner to avoid anti-selection and high risk individuals. Concentrating on the underwriting functions within the area, this individual will provide input to the Manager, Group Insurance, Administration & Underwriting while monitoring the day-to-day workflow within the area.  As the senior of the underwriting area, this individual will be called on to provide expertise on underwriting issues and to make recommendations for work flow and process improvements.  He/she will be asked to provide coaching and training to team members and one-on-one training to more junior staff. This position will be responsible for handling all aspects of the underwriting of Individual and Group Health, Group Life, Group Long Term Disability and Employers Liability benefits. As such, this individual will require a thorough knowledge of underwriting principles, medical terminology, risk assessment and underwriting best practices. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES -         Supervise employees of Group Underwriting department and monitor the departmental performance -         Assign and monitor incoming work -         Complete annual group underwriting staff performance appraisals -         Provide guidance on complicated, technical issues to the underwriting staff -         Ensure that the underwriting functions are performed in an accurate and timely fashion and in accordance with the policies, procedures, and standards of the company. -         Respond to elevated external and internal client requests, queries and complaints in order to maintain and improve client relations (i.e.: provide written communication, empathise with clients by offering short/long term solutions) -         Analyse proposal forms and existing groups and take appropriate steps to ensure that evidence is obtained -         Attend health renewal and client meetings with department heads and/or Sales Representatives -         Evaluate risks of new business and existing clients, making the appropriate underwriting decision for the risk reviewed -         Liase with reinsurers as appropriate -         Preparation of the Swiss Re. premium calculations REQUIREMENTS: -         Three to five years of progressive work experience in Group Insurance with a focus on underwriting -         One to three years experience in a supervisory position with direct reports -         Experience in training principles of underwriting -         Experience in process development and redesign -         College degree/diploma in related field (e.g. Business Administration, Insurance, etc) -         Relevant professional designations (e.g. FLMI, ACS, BID, HIA, etc.) -         In depth insurance knowledge of Group Health, Life, LTD and Employers Liability products -         Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes This opportunity will involve relocating to the beautiful Island of Bermuda for a 2-3 year minimum commitment.  As such, candidates should be highly portable, be able to commit to living in Bermuda for 2-3 years, and have interests that lend themselves to Bermuda's idyllic living environment.
