Just to say that I started Flush-free Niacin from Walmart a week ago.  60 caps of 400 mg niacin and 100 mg inositol for $6 (or so).  Joslin's DM, 13th ed., page 386-7, says this should be the first approach to lowering cholesterol with therapeutic doses of 1.5-3 gm and max of 9 grams per day.   But nicotinamide DOES NOT LOWER cholesterol!  Only nicotinic acid has the lipid improving effects of lowering cholestrol, LDL and triglycerides while raising HDL. My total cholesterol has been averaging 240 mg/dl and HDL about 38 mg/dl.   After 5 days of 1.2-2 grams (4-5 caps) per day my total cholestrol dropped to 206 mg/dl.  This is as predicted in the Joslin's DM 13th with 10-25% lower after niacin therapy has started.  So this is impressive.  HDL jumped to 45 mg/dl. Joslin's DM 13th says it should rise 10-35% with niacin therapy.  I'll push this to 3 gms/day and see what happens. One side effect is higher insulin resistance.  But I have not seen this yet. So I think statin therapy can wait.  Food for thought,
