Today's Truth "With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be" (James 3:9-10 NIV). Friend To Friend The summer heat can be unbearable. North Carolina is by no means a place of cool summers. To the contrary, we Tar Heel residents expect to have our air conditioning units running almost round the clock. But the heat we've experienced at times this year has been uncommonly sweltering. At times, it's been so balmy that my sweat drops had sweat drops! Now, you can call it global warming, or you can call it chance, but I just call it plain old hot! On one of those crazy-hot summer days, I spent time at our local library. I sat on the lower level, which is the coolest area in the building. The vigilante AC unit worked aggressively to protect us book-reading occupants from the external heat wave. I was on the chilly lower level for the better part of two hours, and gradually turned to a human icicle. My fingers were completely numb as I signed out a Hardy Boys book for my son and turned to exit the building. As I opened the door to leave, a forceful wave of heat swept over me. In that moment, I thought, "Wow! That sure is a stark contrast! What a temperature change!" From one extreme to the other, the heat pendulum had swung. Hot to cold, and then hot again. As I considered the contrast, it occurred to me that the temperature of my life might sometimes look the same. It gave me reason to pray. Have you ever gotten up early and had a sweet time with the LORD, only to turn into an unreasonable, raging screamer hours later? Have you ever had an argument with your spouse or children on the way to church, only to cross the threshold of the lobby with blessings and kindness on your tongue? Have you ever driven in traffic with worship music on the dash and praise on your lips when suddenly, someone cut you off and the praises on your tongue turned to cursing? If you've answered yes to any of these, welcome to the Sinner's Club. All humans have an automatic membership that activates at birth and is irrevocable until we accept forgiveness through Jesus Christ, and see His face on the other side of glory. The Bible calls us to a higher, more consistent temperature of living. We must be careful not to praise and curse with the same tongue. Are ... read more »

August 27, 2009 Stepping Out in Faith Mary Southerland Today's Truth Hebrews 11:6 (IC "Without faith no one can please God. Anyone who comes to God must believe that He is real and that He rewards those who truly want to find him." Friend To Friend Billy Graham once said, "Most of us do not understand nuclear fission, but we accept it. I don't understand television, but I accept it. I don't understand radio, but every week my voice goes out around the world, and I accept it. Why is it so easy to accept all these man-made miracles and so difficult to accept the miracles of the Bible?" Faith can be defined as "confidence or trust". We all have faith. We walk into a room and flip a switch, believing in faith that light will result. We sit in a chair, confident it will support us. We go to a doctor who is a total stranger. He gives us a pre_script_ion that we can't read, which we take to a pharmacist we don't know. We are given a bottle of mysterious pills and we gobble them down - all in faith! Our problem is not a lack of faith. Our problem is where we place our faith. Faith is more than just believing. It is acting on that belief. The story is told of a woman who lived in a remote valley in Wales. When electricity came to the rural area, one of the first customers was a young woman with a large family. However, the electric company soon noticed that the woman was using a very small amount of electricity each month and suspecting a problem with the installed equipment, they sent a repairman to check the meter. After a close inspection, the worker found the equipment was installed properly. Confused, the repairman knocked on the front door to give the woman his report. "We've inspected the meter which seems to be working properly. The only thing I can figure out is that you are not using the power that is available to you. Don't you use any electricity?" the repairman asked. "Oh yes" she said. "We turn it on every night to see how to light our oil lamps and then we switch it off again." We often approach God's power in the same way, knowing it exists but failing to appropriate that power. Instead, we work diligently in our own strength until that strength is gone and we are left feeling empty and without purpose. That is not God's plan. Hebrews 11:1 What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see. (NLT) We are not saved by faith plus works. We are saved by faith that leads ... read more »

August 28, 2009 I'm Finished Fighting! Cindi Wood
We hope you are enjoying the Girlfriends in God daily devotions. We (Mary, Sharon, and Gwen) would like to introduce you to some of our special friends. From time-to-time, the Friday devotions will be written by one of our friends in ministry. We call them our "Friday Friends." So grab your Bible and a fresh cup of coffee and drink in the words from our "Friday Friend", Cindi Wood.
Today's Truth "The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still" (Exodus 14:14). Friend To Friend I can't take it anymore, Danita said as she flopped down in the recliner in her den. It was late afternoon, and plenty of evening duties still lay before her. She felt like she'd been putting out fires all day long with no one to help. Somewhere inside of her, she knew she shouldn't be feeling so irritated and helpless. She was running out of energy, and not enjoying life the way she once did. When she breathed her prayer of Lord, please help me ... it was more out of desperation than a sincere cry for help. Have you ever felt like Danita? Oh, I have! Well, take heart frazzled sister! Your God is strong and mighty to save and, He's longing to invade your daily circumstances and pull you out of the pit. Only our God can bring stability out of the messes of life. As your Heavenly Father, it delights Him to comfort you and rescue you. He understands your stress and knows how the events of daily living can leave you feeling haggard and depleted. If you will turn to Him and allow Him to do so, He will fight your battles, restore your joy, and usher you into victorious living. He is waiting for you to be still. As a small child, I escaped to the deep end of the pool one day and jumped into water way over my head. I remember fighting underwater, trying to get back to the top. The harder I fought, the deeper I went. I didn't know how to swim. Exhausted, I stopped fighting and expected to drown. Still and helpless, I then floated to the top, where a lifeguard noticed me and quickly pulled me to safety. Sometimes I feel like I'm drowning in the stress-pool of life, struggling, doing everything imaginable to fight my way ... read more »
