In case you choose the second method, I recommend keeping a large banner in front of you stating what are your goals, because it is very easy to get lost when one goes through these jungles... Sergio Navega. hmm... I doubt that I would ever find a large enough banner. However; this field intruiges me beyound just enchancing my curriculum. But since I am not very familiar about the terms surrounding AI (keep in mind that I come from a more psychological backround then a technical), I wouldn't know where to start. As for now i will try out the books recomended by those who have responded, but I would be very grateful if you could recomend me other books on the subject. I guess I need to get some basic knowledge right now, and if you could direct me to such it would be swell. Thank you for the responce and have a nice halloween   /   Mateusz Pozar

Mateusz Pozar wrote in message < This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it hello fellow humans. What should be my approach if I would like to learn, explore and develop AI? ... yours sincerely   /   mateusz The question of how to approach AI will provoke many (divergent) answers [...] However, if you want to dedicate the rest of your life to this subject and give yourself a chance of finding the *next great breakthrough*, then you will start delving with the periphery of AI: cognitive psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, philosophy, cognitive neuroscience, etc. In case you choose the second method, I recommend keeping a large banner in front of you stating what are your goals, because it is very easy to get lost when one goes through these jungles... Thank you for the responce and have a nice halloween   /   Mateusz Pozar I think one interesting approach to follow if one is serious about AI is to study three sort of things: a) The way AI techniques are being taught at universities This is the traditional textbook _style_, that's important because it reveals what are the available techniques. b) The critics of AI It is very useful to know what are the arguments of those who believe AI will never succeed (at least in their goal of getting near-human level performance). Their arguments may be fragile or even plain nonsense, but one have to know how to answer them if its interest in AI is more than mere curiosity. c) The neuroscience/cognitive psychology approach, as I've mentioned earlier. Some references about item b) that I often use are: Graubard, S. R., The Artificial Intelligence Debate, False Starts, Real Foundations. MIT Press 1988. Luger, George F. Computation & Intelligence. MIT Press 1995. Feigenbaum, Edward A., Feldman, Julian, Computers & Thought. MIT Press 1995 Boden, Margaret A., The Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence. Oxford University Press 1990 Bobrow, D. G., Artificial Intelligence in Perspective. MIT Press 1994. Haugeland, John, Mind Design II, Bradford Book 1997 This last one is my preferred. Regards, Sergio Navega.

If _Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid_ by Douglas Hofstadter has not already been recommended, make sure to get your hands on a copy.  That is the book that got me started.  It makes for a good introduction to some of the more technical aspects. Chris
