Both Genetic and Psychological Risk Factors May Contribute to Anxiety Disorders   WESTPORT, Jun 16 (Reuters Health) - Anxiety disorders seem to be caused by a combination of genetic and psychological risk factors, according to study results reported in the June 14th issue of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. The authors describe theirs as the first study to incorporate genetic strategies and a laboratory-_base_d anxiety and physiological response provocation paradigm in examining the psychopathology of anxiety. Dr. Norman B. Schmidt of Ohio State University, in Columbus, and colleagues analyzed blood samples from 72 subjects for the short (S) and long (L) variants of the serotonin transporter gene (5-HTT). They also asked subjects to complete the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI), a self-report measure of the fear of bodily sensations associated with arousal. Analyses showed that ASI score was unrelated to 5-HTT genotype. The biologic challenge to determine fear response — heart rate variability — was a breath of 35% carbon dioxide, which makes subjects feel that they are momentarily short of breath. Individuals with the L genotype or with a high ASI score showed greater fear response to the challenge. Also, individuals possessing high ASI scores in Group L showed relatively lower heart rate variability in response to the challenge compared with those with high ASI scores in Group S or with low ASI scores in Group L, the investigators write. It's clear that it's not a single gene that produces such disorders, Dr. Schmidt told Reuters Health. He predicts that within the next few years, several different genes will be recognized as contributing to psychopathology. Five years from now, we may profile people _base_d on genetic factors as well as psychologic makeup. J Abnormal Psychol 2000;109:308-320.

interesting info though, most interesting is the admission that it is most likely more then one gene which has been suspected by a few for quite some time-this is not the first study to incorporate blood analysis or other biochemical and genetic analysis much to the chagrin of its authors-but at least they are headed in a direction that may prove of value-some where in the next century so hang out for a while maybe some genetic management short of selective breeding may be available. Thanks for the informatiom tid-bit Dorothy. I just heard today that a group of doctors are going to announce that the basic decoding of the human gene is solved. This should bring some rapid discoveries on how to deal with disease and disorders.                                          Maybe we'll get lucky,                                                             Tim
